Images and data too large for the tools at hand

The medicine laboratory of a public university acquired tissue images at up to eighty zoom levels, and the tools it had could not handle them. Now lecturers and students look at them together on a platform we built.

Projects in this sector

What software does medical and scientific work need for large images and data?

Platforms that open very high resolution images, let several people annotate them together and classify them automatically with machine learning. We did it for the medicine laboratory of a public university, on tissue images that the laboratory’s tools could not open.

Recurring problems in this sector

  1. Slides and images no ordinary viewer can open
  2. Classification that today needs an expert eye on every single sample
  3. Several people who need to look at and annotate the same image
How we work here

On the platform runs machine learning software that analyses the images and recognises by itself tumour cells of the liver and pancreas. It has been released and works on the laboratory’s images.

Frequently asked questions

How do you open slides and images ordinary viewers cannot handle?
With platforms built for heavy data: they open and display very high resolution images that ordinary viewers cannot handle.
Can machine learning help with classification?
Yes: automatic classification gives a first read on every sample, so the expert eye does not have to go through them all from scratch.
Can several people work on the same image?
Yes: lecturers and students work on the same images and share what they see.
